Civilization: "a society, its culture, and its way of life during a particular period of time or in a particular part of the world" -Oxford Learner’s Dictionary
The cultivation of the grapevine and its vinification has grown and developed with the rise of civilizations. Modern winemaking now employs the natural science of fermentation with the lessons we have learned from our mentors over the centuries. The creation of geographic designations and the concept of terroir descend directly from these lessons. At Civilization we are honored to be a part of history.
Growing up, we were a family that practiced fermentations. The first vintage of memory was in 1990, producing wine from grapes and local fruits. The aromas of carboys instilled an early passion which was only further fostered by the draws of lineage and family connectivity.
Life in Santa Barbara began with a chance encounter in 2008 while studying for the CA Bar Exam. Immediately thereafter the passion led to the 2009 Santa Maria grape harvest. Every opportunity learn was taken over positions with local producers, including Costa de Oro, Sanguis, Grassini Family Vineyards, Margerum, Avisa Wine Design, Presqu'ile, Clendenen-Lindquist Vintners, Bevela Wines, and more.
To say I'm a "one-man-show" would be a dishonest disservice. Producing my wines in Lompoc at the Lompoc Wine Factory is a gift. We have a local community of winemakers who work together and volunteer when needed. We currently produce ~400 cases a year, but with your support we hope to grow each year!
